Virtual Teams: When knowledge sharing is at the center

In many multinational companies, teams are put together based on competencies and position rather than physical location. Knowledgeable, specialized IT professionals are organized in teams across national borders, preferably with a team manager located in the head office.

Often team members with the same professional competences are put together to ensure knowledge sharing within the subject-specific area. However, when these teams' members are divided into different locations, the consequence is that the important sharing of knowledge must take place virtually.

In practice, this means that these teams' skilled employees and specialists often only really share knowledge and discuss complex professional challenges when they see each other through Skype once a week.
